Roblox mandates facial verification for global chat access
Roblox has implemented mandatory age checks using facial verification for all users worldwide to access chat features, following lawsuits and investigations into child safety issues. The company tested the requirement in select markets last month before global rollout.
The age verification process requires users to open the Roblox mobile application and grant camera permissions. They then follow on-screen prompts to perform facial verification. Roblox states that upon completion of the processing, it deletes all captured images and videos of the user. A third-party vendor named Persona handles the verification and similarly deletes the media files after processing.
Users aged 13 years and older have the option to verify their age through ID submission as an alternative to facial analysis. Roblox specifies that age checks remain optional for basic platform usage. Access to any communication features, including chat functions, necessitates successful verification.
In cases where the facial verification yields an inaccurate age estimate, affected users may submit an appeal. Alternative verification pathways include ID upload or parental controls, which enable parents to adjust and confirm their child’s age details within the account settings.
Roblox employs various behavioral indicators to monitor user activity continuously. “Leveraging multiple signals, Roblox is constantly evaluating user behavior to determine if someone is significantly older or younger than expected,” the company stated in a blog post. “In these situations, Roblox will soon ask users to repeat the age‑check process.” This mechanism ensures ongoing alignment between verified age and observed patterns.
Successful verification grants entry to an age-segmented chat system. Communication restricts users to interactions with peers in their assigned group or immediately adjacent groups. Roblox defines six distinct age bands: under 9 years, 9 to 12 years, 13 to 15 years, 16 to 17 years, 18 to 20 years, and 21 years and older. For instance, individuals in the 9 to 12 years group may engage with users from the under 9 years group, their own 9 to 12 years group, and the 13 to 15 years group.
For children under 9 years, chat functionality activates only after parental consent, which follows completion of the required age check. This default disablement provides an additional safeguard for the youngest users on the platform.
The timing of this global mandate coincides with legal actions from the attorneys general of Texas and Louisiana. These lawsuits target Roblox over allegations of inadequate child protections, stemming from reports of young users encountering grooming attempts and explicit content exposure. Multiple investigations have similarly scrutinized the platform’s safety measures for minors.
Roblox positions the new facial and ID-based verification as superior to the prior method, where users self-reported their birth year during account creation. This update aims to establish more reliable age determinations across its user base.
